On May 28 […], Himmler had put the final touches to a document, earlier approved by Hitler, for a massive reduction in the population of the conquered East. The document envisaged that the population of what had once been Poland, with its diverse groups, should be 'broken up into the largest possible number of parts and fragments'. Then the 'racially valuable elements' would be 'extracted from this hotch-potch', leaving the residue to 'wither away'.
